What does it mean to be “petite”?
In the apparel industry, “petite” is another word for short. Typically, it means 5′ 4″ or under.
It is only related to height and not size. So, it is possible to be plus-size AND petite.
What is petite sizing?
Petite sizing is a dedicated pattern made for shorter women! It has shorter sleeve, pant, and torso lengths and adjusted proportions such as waist, hip, and knee locations.
It may also be appropriate if you are over 5′ 4″ and have a shorter torso or legs.
The Problem
Shopping for clothes as a petite woman is difficult!
Apparel brands typically design clothing for women 5′ 5″ to 5′ 9″, then scale their patterns to different sizes. This results in ill-fitting and less stylish options for petite women. If short and petite options are available, color and style choices are often limited.
This market gap forces petite women to spend more time searching for suitable options, settle for compromised fit and style, or spend more money tailoring.
Petite options in outdoor apparel are even more limited. With all the technical materials and features, gear is difficult to tailor.
45% of US women are petite. Why is petite sizing an afterthought?
